Subject: The Project of “Memories of Studying in China”

Dear Study in China Alumni,

Many thanks for your interest and participation in the documentary of “Journey to the East: Canadians Studying in China,” which has been screened on different occasions and uploaded onto the website. About 15 clips of interviews have also been available for the public to get to know your studying in China experiences.

Today we are sending another e-mail to seek your advice and participation in a new project of “Memories of Studying in China,” an album or a commemoration booklet for the 45th anniversary of China-Canada Scholars’ Exchange Program, among other government or non-government supported initiatives to help with international learners and scholars in China.

The year of 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up and the 45th anniversary of the CCSEP. A gathering / roundtable of Study in China alumni is now being considered to be held in Canada later this year. Since 1973, when the China-Canada Scholars’ Exchange Program was launched by the two countries, around 800 Canadian students and scholars have been studying in China with the scholarships provided by the two governments. We have recently developed “Canada Learning Initiative in China” and “China-Canada Young Leaders Program” to encourage Canadians to study or do research in China. More and more Canadians have studied in China with different scholarships and even self-supported efforts.

We are very proud to learn that you are active in different walks of life, contributing to the social advancement and economic development of our two countries and the rest of the world. You are also contributors to the China-Canada understanding and friendship. Your experiences and stories while and after studying in China, your reflections on the studying or doing research in China, your relationship and collaboration with Chinese partners, and your advice and encouragement to the new generation of Canadians interested in China, among other things, are inspiring and valuable. Your words, videos and pictures are quite worthwhile to keep in paper and digital forms. To this end, we are proposing another project of “Memories of Studying in China” composed of written stories about studying in China at different times from 1970s to 2010s. Touching and inspiring stories, together with scanned pictures and souvenirs, will be collected in an album or a commemoration booklet.

The commemoration booklet or album will be supervised by the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy, with support from the International Education Office of Global Affairs Canada, the Canadians Study in China Network and the Canadian Bureau for International Education. If you took the interviews in 2017, parts of your clips will be turned into words around June 20, which will then be revised and supplemented by yourself before July 15, with 5 scanned pictures of yours memorizing your China learning experiences. If you haven’t taken any interviews, we would encourage you to write your Studying-in-China stories and share with us 5 scanned pictures before July 15, 2018.

We are thinking of a competition of memories of China learning experiences, with some rewards to 8 alumni to help with travel to the gathering in Canada this year. If you have been on the CCSEP, please send your written stories (editable word document) and pictures to Miao Song at miaosong2006@gmail.com. If you have been on some other Chinese Government Scholarships programs or even self-supporting, please send your written stories (editable word document) and pictures to Jamal Alsarif at dr.alsharifjamal@gmail.com. Please also send Dai Zhehua a copy at daizhehua@cnembedu.ca.

We would appreciate your thoughts and input about this project. Your participation in writing about your Study in China experiences and stories will be greatly valued. Could you please tell us if you are interested in this project and help disseminate this message to other alumni who have studied in China at different times and on different programs?

All the best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you soon!
